DEI Repertoire Accountability Checklist
1. Is this the only arrangement/version of this piece?
a. If not, is this the best representation of a particular genre, style, or perspective?
2. Is this piece representative of a non-eurocentric country/region/culture?
a. If so, what experience and research has the composer/arranger done to make them an expert?
b. If not, could it be replaced by something that is?
3. Whose perspective is presented via the text?
a. For example – is the poetry written by a person who identifies as female, but set by a male-identifying composer?
i. Can you feature a work that centers womxn’s lived experiences, over men’s narration of womxn’s experiences? (this should apply to all cultures and historically excluded populations as well)
4. Does this piece contain problematic text?
a. Can the text be omitted or altered?
b. If not, can you find a different piece?
5. Is the text translated into English from another language?
a. If so – who wrote the translation?
b. Is it accurate?
6. When examining your concert program overall, who is represented and who is not?
a. Can any of the pieces that represent the majority be replaced with piece(s) that represent historically excluded populations?
7. Who benefits financially from the purchase of this music?
a. Can you use your purchasing power to support historically excluded composers/arrangers?
