I Would Live In Your Love – SA(div) by Ashley Eyre
About this piece: Sara Teasdale’s text is often set by choral composers for its natural lyricism and rhythm; and this piece is no exception. Much of Eyre’s composition is unison or two parts, with a soaring melody that serves as the connective tissue for the whole piece. Expressive piano accompaniment portrays the ocean waves in the phrasing of the poem. The expansive middle section does require some higher voices to stretch to an A6, but it is not for long, and is well supported by the other (divided) voices beneath. The emotional journey of music enhances the tenderness, depth, and passionate love in the text.
La Marche des Rois– SSA – Ron Jeffers
About this Piece: Based on the traditional 13th century French carol about seeing the Magi parade by, this arrangement does not stray far from its origins. Jaunty, a cappella, with cannonic phrase fragments towards the end makes for a fun, accessible Winter/Holiday Concert selection. Poetic and literal translation is provided with the score, which is older- and handwritten by Jeffers himself- along with a piano reduction for easier support during rehearsal.
Stand Up – SSAA – arr. Tea Douglas
About this Piece: Originally composed as the end credits for the movie “Harriet” this arrangement is a cappella, includes simple body percussion, and benefits from rich and full vocal tone throughout. A soloist is featured at the beginning, setting up verse-chorus form similar to a church hymn when the whole ensemble joins in at the refrain. Challenges lie in maintaining energy but not rushing the tempo, and rhythmic and stylistic accuracy. Additionally- for younger ensembles a concern would be that the Alto 2 line is low, and may come out airy. The invitation to all to “Stand Up” for what is right, and to persevere when challenges seem insurmountable is powerful for listeners and performers alike.
